The Majors
The four majors played annually in the United States and United Kingdom make up the Grand Slam of golf. These four tournaments comprise the toughest, most competitive golf events contested by professional golfers. The winner of a major is awarded with the maximum 50 points on the international golf rankings.
The term “major championships” was originally used to describe the four most prestigious golf tournaments on the PGA tour. The original majors included the Western Open, which was replaced by the Open Championship during the 1960s.
Today the majors are open to members of the PGA Tour, European Tour, Japan tour and Sunshine tour.
- The US Masters: This is the first of the majors played every year. During the second week of April, 93 of the world’s top players travel to Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia to compete for the privilege of wearing the green jacket of the Augusta National Golf Club.
- The US Open: With a massive field of 156 players, the US Open is one of the biggest golf tournaments in the world. Played during the third week of June, the event is nomadic, ensuring that play takes place on only the toughest golf courses in the United States.
- The Open Championship (British Open): Hosted annually at one of nine historic links courses in the United Kingdom, the Open Championship is unarguably the most majestic golf tournament in the world. The Open Championship is also the oldest major, first held in 1860.
- The PGA Championship: Popularly known as “Glory’s last shot”, the PGA Championship is traditionally scheduled to take place 4 weeks after the conclusion of the Open Championship. A win at the PGA Championship guarantees a player access to a variety of professional golf’s biggest events.
