WGC-CA Championship

The WGC-CA Championship is the second World Golf Championship contested annually by the members of both the PGA Tour and the European PGA Tour. The tournament features one of the smallest fields on the professional golfing tours, with only 70 players participating in the four round stroke-play event.

For the first decade of its history the WGC-CA Championship was hosted by golf courses in both the United States and Europe. In 2008 the event will be moved to a permanent home, the Doral Golf Resort & Spa’s Blue Monster Course in Florida.

WGC-CA Championship History

The WGC-CA Championship dates back to 1999 when the World Golf Championships were first conceived and planned by the International Federation of PGA Tours. The inaugural event was held in Valderrama, Spain, and won by Tiger Woods in a play-off with local player Miguel Angel Jiminez.

The tournament alternated between venues in Europe and the United States for the next several years, and was canceled once in 2001 due to the 9/11 bombings in New York. The tournament has a strong foundation in charity work, with all proceeds donated to the First Tee initiative for underprivileged children.

WGC-CA Championship Winners

Tiger Woods has made the WGC-CA Championship his own since the tournament started in 1999. Woods captured the inaugural title, before going on to claim another five WGC-CA Championship winners titles.

Only three other players have managed to win the WGC-CA Championship during the event’s history. Canada’s Mike Weir became the first player other than Woods to win the tournament in 2000. Ernie Els then broke Wood’s run of victories in the event by winning the WGC-CA Championship in 2004. Australian Geoff Ogilvy ended another run of three consecutive victories by Tiger Woods, with a win in 2008.
