The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is the third and final World Golf Championships event contested by the members of both the PGA Tour and European PGA Tour. The tournament is hosted by the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, as part of a five-year sponsorship deal with the Bridgestone Firestone company.

The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational features a field of 75 of the top ranked players on the American and European PGA Tours. The event has specific eligibility criteria, and targets the participants in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational takes place annually in August and offers a substantial purse of $8 million.

WGC-Bridgestone Invitational History

Unlike the majority of World Golf Championships events, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational evolved out of a previous tournament. The predecessor of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was the World Series of Golf, first held in 1962, and hosted for many years by the Firestone Country Club.

In 1998 the creation of the World Golf Championships led to the prestigious World Series of Golf also being assimilated into the championships. The World Series of Golf was, at this time, considered to be one of the most important events on the PGA Tour.

The inaugural WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was played in 1999, as the third fixture in the World Golf Championships. The event was initially sponsored by World Series of Golf sponsor NEC, but came under new sponsorship in 2006 when Bridgestone took over from NEC.

WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Winners

Tiger Woods has dominated the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational since its inception in 1999, winning the title on six occasions.
