The Northern Trust Open is one of the oldest and most prestigious regular season events contested by the members of the PGA Tour. The tournament, first played in 1926, takes place early in the annual golf season at the Palisades golf course in California.
As an open-field event, the Northern Trust Open has golfers qualifying according to either rankings or pre-tournament qualifying play. The quality of the field varies from year to year, however, the tournament purse of $6 million is enough to ensure that a selection of top golfers are in attendance in any given year.
Northern Trust Open History
The inaugural Northern Trust Open was played at Los Angeles Country Club in California in 1926. The tournament was nomadic for the first few years of its existence, moving around different locations in California before being suspended for the duration of the Second World War.
The Northern Trust Open was resurrected in 1944 and moved to its present location at the Riviera Country Club one year later. The tournament has been hosted at the Riviera Country Club every year since, with the exception of 1998 when it was moved to the Valencia Country Club due to the hosting of the US Open at the Riviera.
The Northern Trust Open received a substantial boost in 2007 when the Northern Trust banking group agreed to a five-year sponsorship deal. The change in sponsorship resulted in a substantial increase in tournament prize money as well as upgrades to several elements of the Northern Trust Open.
Northern Trust Open Betting
As a regular season event the Northern Trust Open gives rise to a good, but unspectacular, array of golf betting markets. Punters are able to back players in a selection of the most popular golf betting markets, and in years when weaker fields participate, can cash in on high odds for a variety of bets.
Northern Trust Open Winners
A number of high-profile golfers, including Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer and Corey Pavin claimed one or more Northern Trust Open winners titles during their careers. However, the records for the tournament were set prior to 1960, when Lloyd Mangrum and Donald Smith both claimed four titles apiece.
During the past decade top ranked golfers have not been particularly successful in the Northern Trust Open, giving a number of less well-known golfers the opportunity to claim an important PGA title. However, Phil Mickelson’s win at the 2007 Northern Trust Open indicates that in the wake of the re-branding of the tournament, the world’s best may once again reign supreme at Riviera Country Club.
